National Trust, South Hams Centre
If you are already a National Trust member or volunteer, you might like to join your local supporter group.
The South Hams Centre promotes and supports the work of the National Trust through a programme of outings and social events giving you the opportunity to meet like-minded people, make friends and learn more about the National Trust.
The South Hams covers the southern-most part of Devon, reaching almost to Plymouth in the west and Brixham in the east, and going as far north as the edge of Dartmoor.
The whole area is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and enjoys some of the country's most beautiful and unspoilt stretches of coastline.
The National Trust has three places in the area: Overbeck's near Salcombe, Coleton Fishacre near Kingswear/Dartmouth, and Greenway overlooking the beautiful Dart River.
It also owns many acres of coastline, woodland and farmland, and is responsible for maintaining a balance between protecting the area and facilitating public access. The South West Coast Path runs through the area.
The South Hams Centre was established in 1980 and has an active membership drawn mainly from Thurlestone, Kingsbridge, Salcombe, Modbury and the surrounding areas. Fundraising events and a social programme are arranged throughout the year, with coach outings to National Trust and other properties and gardens in Devon, Somerset and Cornwall. There are walks and illustrated talks on a variety of subjects; other events include lunches, coffee mornings, a Summer Fair, and concerts. Members also receive a programme and a quarterly newsletter.
Since its formation in 1980, the Centre has raised well over a quarter of a million pounds in support of national and local projects such as those at Overbeck's, Coleton Fishacre and Greenway. It has helped with paths for wheelchair users at Bolberry Down and Snapes Point and with other improvements to make visits to all these properties even more enjoyable.
We welcome new members. If you join during the final three months of the year, your membership will be valid until the end of the following year. To become a Centre member please email the membership secretary or the chair or phone 01548 561661. We should be delighted to hear from you
